I've been up since 4am, because I went in to work from 5am to 7am. It is currently almost 9am, so I have been up quite a while already. I was debating taking a nap, but I decided to make a pot of coffee instead. Today is my one day "off" and I am trying to make the most of it by doing laundry and such. Anyway, as I bring my cup of coffee into the livingroom I see(and hear) the garbage truck in front of the house, and I am reminded of a childhood dream of mine.
Kids are funny. They often don't see the "dirty" side of things. I remember being about 3 or 4 and thinking that being a garbage man was quite possibly the coolest job (other than working at McDonalds) on earth. I mean, wow, you got to ride hanging on to the back of this HUGE truck! Nevermind you had to handle other people's filth all day long, day in and day out. Not to mention the fact that when you ride on the back of that truck all of that nice garbage aroma blows right into your face. So, with that being said, I'm glad I grew up, and my dreams changed....although sometimes the aroma isn't so pleasant in the ER either....

ReplyDeleteSo, yeah.... when I arrived to pick up my then 3 year old from my childcare provider, he rushed to me, ecstatic..."Mommy!!! I want to be a TRASH MAN when I grow up!!" "Sure Stephen, you want to drive the truck" " NOOOOOOOO!!!! I want to RIDE ON THE BACK!!!"
ReplyDeleteYeah, it's been the dream of many in every generation, I'm sure.... then they go to kindergarten and get all "informed" about the "good jobs."
Which led to the later proclamation, by my then 10 year old, after a field trip to Jamestown, VA... "Mom, I KNOW what I want to be when I grow up!!!" (Really? Not a TRASH MAN?" "What, Stephen?" " I want to be 1/2 time a computer programmer (guess what MOM did for a living) and 1/2 time a GLASS BLOWER." "OK, Stephen, sounds GREAT!!!"
Nevertheless, when the same child, then 12 years old and pondering the future announced he'd decided where he wanted to go to college, I was hesitant to ask...but I did.... "Either YALE or FLORIDA STATE!!!!" ummmm OK, I know I'm and FSU grad, but.. WHY those two choices? "Well, YALE is a good school, but very expensive, and FLORIDA STATE has a GREAT MARCHING BAND!!!" -- LOL.. thanks for the memories!
LOL Judy! Who can compete with a great Marching Band?? LOL Kids! Sometimes it is easy to forget that we all were one once. :)
