Guardians....

Life. It is the most precious thing we have. I believe that no matter what Deity if any you choose to worship it is our duty to protect those that cannot protect themselves. Adults are to protect the children in their care and sometimes the children that are NOT in their care, and we ALL are put here to protect the lesser beings being the animals of the earth.

Yesterday, I came across a kitten in the Wal-Mart parking lot. He was not in the best shape. Could I just leave him there to an unknown fate with the hope that some other person would be kind enough to take him in and give him a good home? I agonized over it for quite a bit and decided that no I couldn't. So, I took him to my husbands office. This tiny ball of fur. They all "ooh'ed and aah'ed" over him. After all, he is a cutie pie. No one wanted him of course. My husband said, "Are you going to take him to the shelter?" I said, "No I'm not." So, I left his office and drove him straight to the vet. $81 later "Jasper" had a clean bill of health and a new home.

I got him home and got him settled in. He is really tiny, so I took an old rusty baking pan and made him a litter box til he was big enough to use the big one. Fixed him a bowl of food and water of his own and a nice safe place in the kid's area where I could keep him safe from my other marauding kitty cats. They were not pleased at his presence. He got hissed at and slapped immediately. I know this is kitty way of establishing "pecking order," but I don't have to like it.

He slept with Kendra, and my husband was so angry that he slept on the sofa. :( I promised him I wouldn't bring ANYTHING else into the house. Apparently that isn't good enough. He left this morning without saying goodbye. Without a kiss. Without a "kiss-my-ass." It isn't like we have 30 cats. With Jasper we have 3. We have a HUGE house. He didn't even KNOW he was in the house til he asked me what I did with him.

I don't drink. I don't smoke. I don't party. I don't see the problem.

  1. Welcome to little Jasper! Your DH will get over it. Not sure what I would have done, considering the cat killing dogs in the neighborhood. I learned that with Catten. How cruel for someone to just leave him there, he could have gotten run over! I myself have gotten rid of kittens at Wal Mart - we put up a sign on the car - "Free Kittens" and within an hour, all three had found what I think were good homes - children old enough to respect a pet (with their parents there too), just oohed and aahed over them, I didn't have enough to go around.

Good luck with your new little guy!

  2. I think 3 cats is like the first pee after drinking beer. The seal is broken. But, if you are taking care of Jasper while looking for a new good home for him it's not the same. I guess you are keeping him though? I hate to say it but sometimes compromise is the best way in a relationship. And I'm not talking your values here or how you should be the one giving in-which is totally not compromise. I guess what I'm saying is surely you don't want to turn into the 80's hit "Don't go away mad(just go away)" by Motley Crue, you know?

  3. LOL Brook. 3 is Definitely MY personal limit. He makes it sound as if he is the caregiver to the animals, and he is not. Half the time, you don't even know they are here. They are cats, they sleep all the time. I just can't bear the thought of taking another cat to the shelter, but I will certainly NOT be bringing anymore home. Too much drama. We shall see how this plays out. He is a cutie, and if I have to rehome him then I will.

  4. 'Cause we all know the DRAMA sucks-and we know who the drama queens are! ;)

  5. Soft-hearted kitty lovers always have to deal with others who don't have that compassion. I hope hubby gets over it. One of the odd things I have witnessed, especially with cats, is that they will "favor" the person who could care less about them....I hope one day you walk in to find hubby sleeping on the couch with Jasper curled up in his lap!

'til then... no marital advise from this particular marital failure times two!

  6. Well, I had to re-home Jasper. Hubby wouldn't budge. We have to pick our battles right. At least I know he is safe and loved and healthy. So no harm, no foul!
